The Biggest News from DC Fandome
On August 22, 2020 we had part 1 of DC Fandome, a new virtual experience for DC fans to get the latest scoops on everything going on in the DC universe in terms of films, video games, TV shows, and comics. Last Saturday, they presented the “Hall of Heroes” showcase, which featured several announcements from the upcoming DC movies, video games and comics. Here is a rundown of the biggest news from the weekend:
The Cheetah Uncaged
We kicked things off with a bang! As the director and cast of Wonder Woman 1984, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2017 box-office hit, reunited to answer some fan questions and shared some new tidbits on the movie. The biggest highlight was probably the new trailer which finally gave us an official first look at Kristen Wiig’s Cheetah in full beast mode! Hopefully, the CGI improves a little more, especially if the movie should have originally been released already if it wasn’t for COVID.
All in the Bat-Family
We got a new look at Gotham City without Batman in the upcoming video game, Batman: Gotham Knights. This time around you’ll get to play as all your favorite characters in the Bat-Family including Robin, Batgirl, Nightwing, and Red Hood. The creators teased a mystery, unlike anything you’ve seen before in other games, with the Court of Owls right at its center. If this is anything like the Arkham games, we’re in for a good time!
The Flash In the DC Multiverse of Madness
After so much back and forth with this movie, like directors onboarding and then departing the project, we finally got some traction on The Flash movie and yes, despite all rumors, Ezra Miller is back in the title role.
The real madness of it all is that not only are we going to delve into the deeper DC Multiverse, with Flashpoint being the main storyline that pushes it forward, but we’re also getting supporting/cameo roles from not one but two Batmen! Micheal Keaton is officially reprising his role as Batman from the ’90s Tim Burton Batman movies along with Ben Affleck, who will be giving his Dark Knight a proper send-off after playing coy over returning to the role for the last few years and eventually dropping out of Matt Reeves’ film. With a new costume redesign, and confirmation that the DC multiverse & all the DC movies we’ve seen before this are canon, this should be an interesting take on the character. We’ll see if this multiverse movie or Marvel’s upcoming multiverse will do it better.
Who’s Who in The Suicide Squad?
James Gunn is taking a break from the Guardians of the Galaxy and dives into the DC Universe to tackle a sequel/reboot to the first Suicide Squad movie directed by David Ayer. We already had confirmation on some returning characters/actors from the first movie such as Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. But now, the speculation around the new characters has come to an end, as we now have final confirmation that the rest of the squad will consist of Idris Elba as Bloodsport, Michael Rooker as Savant, Peter Capaldi as Thinker, John Cena as Peacemaker, Pete Davidson as Blackguard, Sean Gunn as Weasel, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher 2, David Destmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Flula Borg as Javelin, Nathan Fillion as T.D.K. and Alice Braga as a new character named SolSoria. With no Jared Leto in sight and more comic accurate costumes, THIS looks like the Suicide Squad movie we should have gotten all along!
#TheSnyderCutReleased
After three years of speculation, and ongoing demands from DC fans to #ReleaseTheSnyderCut it’s finally coming! Zack Snyder will fully get to release his vision of the maligned 2017 movie. Snyder gave us a new trailer to get us all hyped for the 2021 release of the Snyder Cut on HBO Max. The format will be four one-hour parts, with it later becoming available as one lengthy, four-hour feature film. There are also plans to release it for international audiences who don’t have HBO Max, but in what format is still being discussed. All I know is, after all the hype and speculation this movie has built, this movie needs to be Snyder’s Magnum Opus. Because, if we end up with something worse than that Frankenstein’s monster hybrid Joss Whedon put out, why bother?

Can You Smell What Black Adam is Cooking?
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has teased his appearance as Black Adam in a Shazam! movie for what feels like almost a decade. He finally decided to skip an appearance in the first Shazam! movie to get the spotlight in his own film first. Now the wheels are in motion for Black Adam to make his first big-screen appearance along with a fully assembled Justice Society of America consisting of Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher and the yet to be cast JSA members Hawkman, Dr. Fate, and Cyclone. Johnson even teased a potential showdown with Superman, which wouldn’t be too surprising since Henry Cavill’s agent is also The Rock’s ex-wife. Johnson later revealed via Twitter that Hawkgirl was originally meant to be a part of the JSA line-up, but due to “complicated reasons” was later replaced with the character of Cyclone.
The Battinson Rises
Another hotly anticipated project, The Batman, from director Matt Reeves and starring Robert Pattinson in the title role, gave us new reasons to get excited for the latest take on the Dark Knight. It was confirmed that this iteration of Batman will take place in a different universe than the core DCEU and will be set around Bruce Wayne’s second year as the Caped Crusader. Matt Reeves also touched on the upcoming HBO Max show based on Gotham PD that will be set in Year One of this iteration of Batman. Reeves also confirmed that Gotham will look unique and not blatantly like Chicago or Pittsburgh like previous Batman films. This film looks like the movie Se7en but with Batman characters and I’m all here for it!

Other big announcements…
Shazam himself, Zachary Levi, came in along with his castmates to release the title for the sequel, Shazam: Fury of the Gods along with a cameo from comedian Sinbad, so he can finally correct the Mandela effect of starring in a Shazam movie.
Aquaman 2 is still some ways off from shooting but director James Wan and Ocean Master himself, Patrick Wilson, came in to tease us as to what we can expect in the upcoming sequel, including a slightly more serious tone incorporating real-life events. Ocean Master is confirmed to be returning for the 2022 sequel.
At the Titans panel, it was revealed that season three will be primarily set in Gotham City this time around. Get ready to see Jason Todd suit up as Red Hood, and Barbara Gordon will show up as the Commissioner of the Gotham City Police Department, and she wants Nightwing and his team out of her city. Scarecrow will also be in this upcoming season as an Arkham Asylum inmate who offers his services as a profiler for the GCPD, presumably in a Hannibal Lecter style fashion.
The Superman: Man of Tomorrow panel also revealed that we’ll be getting a few more DC animated movies coming our way. Starting with Batman: Soul of the Dragon early next year, followed by Justice Society: Word War II, set in the early days of the DCAU, and, at long last, a two-part animated adaptation of Batman: The Long Halloween!
A surprise announcement from the event was that Milestone Comics are returning to DC publishing. Milestone principals Reggie Hudlin and Denys Cowan joined DC Publisher/CCO Jim Lee to reveal that an all-newStatic Shockdigital comic book series will arrive next February, followed by an original graphic novel with art by Cowan. It was also confirmed at the event that a new live-action Static Shock movie is in development.
We also got a peek at a new upcoming Suicide Squad video game from Rocksteady titled Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, where you’ll be able to play as Deadshot, Harley Quinn, Captain Boomerang or King Shark.
